Big Day

Our family had a lot going on today. We had to get up by 7 this morning to take Kevin to his appointment with the psychologist. We were going to be getting the results of the testing that was done at the past 3 appointments. After that Kevin had Little League tryouts. After tryouts was the Girl Scout cookie booth sale that Shaylee and I had to do. This was our 3rd Saturday in a row of booth sales and the girls have done absolutely awesome. We have the next 4 Saturdays to go and then Girl Scout cookie sales will be over for the year. At seven o'clock tonight I took the kids to our ward party, which was a 50's Sock Hop theme. So fun! Here's some more detailed information about the day.

Kevin has been officially diagnosed as having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder predominately inattentive type as well as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I really wasn't surprised by this because I had my suspicions about these already. The really interesting information that we learned is that he has an overall IQ of 125.

His verbal IQ was only 103, while his nonverbal was 140! The doctor said the the ADHD is the cause for the lower verbal. He is not able to concentrate on what people are saying and retain it. That is where his ADHD being predominately inattentive type comes in. He doesn't bounce off the walls or anything, his brain is just too full of stuff that he can't concentrate long enough to effectively listen and remember simple things.

So, the IQ information was interesting, but then the doctor got to the the results of his Wide Range Achievement Test, Revision 3 (WRAT 3). According to this test Kevin's Reading score was on a high school grade level and his math score was on an 8th grade level. The lower math score is also due to his ADHD. His brain can't focus well enough to work quickly enough to finish a timed mathematical test, so even if he gets all the answers that he does correct, he never finishes a test so there are many answered left incomplete. I had actually been noticing this for the last year or two when he would bring home his times math papers. he does great on all of his other math work because he has plenty of time to complete it.

Anyway, the Dr. recommends that we contact Kevin's pediatrician and get Kevin on a trial of medication to see how that goes. He would also like to continue to see Kevin because even if the medicine works, it can't fix problems like social awkwardness that kids like Kevin have.

So there, that is the big news on Kevin. As for Little League practice, Kevin was the first one there so he was only gone for about half an hour. We will find out what team he gets placed on some time next month.

Our cookie booth sale was great! The girls do awesome. They wear their tutu's because it draws people's attention and the come to get cookies. They are told all the time how cute they are. We were visited today by one of the head Girl Scout administrators in our city who told us that we are becoming famous. She has people coming into the shop all the time telling her that they saw some girls out selling cookies in their tutu's. Last week we actually had a visit from Joy the Clown who saw the girls dressed up and had to stop to talk to them. She was all decked out in her clown-ness and we got some pictures of her with the girls. Shaylee and I will be rolling through some neighborhoods to do our own cookie sales on Monday since she doesn't have any school.

The Sock Hop was so much fun! Peter didn't come since he had to go to the school to get some work done so it was just me and the kiddo's. We danced and had root beer floats, did the hokey pokey, got our picture taken next to and in a cardboard pink Cadillac and everything. They did a hula hoop contest in stages. The first was ages up to 6 so Ashlee stood there and moved her hoop around, dropped it on the floor and all that. They need to make smaller hula hoops for little kiddo's. Maybe they do, I don't know.

Anyway, then they had the 7 to 11 year old's. Shaylee and Kevin both grabbed hoops and got ready. Shaylee kept it going for about a minute, which is about what I expected. I was videoing it with my cell phone. When her hoop dropped I moved over to record Kevin. He just kept going and going and going. Then he started doing tricks like turning around while keeping it going and jumping and stuff like that and the hoop still didn't drop. I recorded for almost 3 minutes! He won the contest for his age group. I was impressed!

My boy has some mad Hula Hooping skillz!
It was a super fun night and I hate to admit that I was kind of glad that Peter wasn't there. Don't get me wrong, I love my husband, but he is not interested in dances and such so if he had been there I probably would have just sat at a table with him talking. Without him there I was out on the dance floor dancing around and playing with my kids. I got a bit of a workout! I even got to dance a slow dance with my boy. So nice!
Well, that was my day. Been busy and I'm tired, but it's a good kind of tired. I'm also a bit sunburned!
