I was on my way to the school to deliver the cakes when this happened:
This is the UT cake. It was a horrible moment. I cried.
As I was driving to the school to drop off my carefully crafted cake, someone started to pull out of their driveway right as I was about to pass by on the street. I hit my brakes, and the longhorn flew. Never knew cows could fly, huh? Well, I learned they can--at least the cake and frosting kind.
It was truly amazing: the OU cake was carefully placed on the floor of the van in front of the passenger seat and the UT cake was placed in the passenger seat. When I hit the brakes the UT cake flew forward, over the OU cake and into the area just under the glove box right behind the OU cake. Amazing! The OU cake was fine. I pulled over. And I cried. Then I got out of the car to clean up as much as I could and move everything so that the OU cake would continue to be fine. And the person who pulled out in front of me? They went on their way as if nothing had happened.
I got back into the car and went on my way to pick up the boy that I pick up from school every day (i was already significantly late and knew he would be waiting in the school office). As I drove I called the PTA president to inform her of the predicament and tell her I would go to one of the grocery bakeries to get something to replace my lovingly created cake.
In a flash of brilliance, or whatever, I decided to buy an undecorated and unfrosted cake from the bakery and then take it home to decorate it myself. I still had an hour and a half or so before it had to be at the school, after all. This time around the cake stayed in it's rectangular shape and was frosted in orange with a white piped in longhorn logo in the middle. It also said "hook 'em horns" and was apparently a success since it won for highest bid of the 4 cakes there.
It went for $75 and my OU cake came in third with a bid of $45. The other two cakes were made by another PTA member and went for $55 (Texas Tech) and $35? (A&M) respectively. I was proud of my cakes--all 3 of them!
